Go Euro This Winter

Know the facts before you decide on off-season travel

by Nicole Meoli

European travel during the off-season (mid- to late November through Easter) has some great advantages, but be sure to weigh all of the pros and cons of traveling during this period. Do your research to determine if the cost savings is worth any disadvantages. Here’s a short list to get you thinking.

Advantages of travel during off-season:

  • Cheaper airfares, cruises, tours and hotels.
  • Better chance at last-minute specials.
  • Fewer tourists and shorter lines.
  • Reduced entrance fees for attractions.
  • More relaxed pace of sightseeing.
  • Greater availability of travel dates.

Disadvantages of travel during off-season:

  • Cold, inclement weather.
  • Heavier packing: more and warmer clothing needed for traveling to Europe in the winter vs. summer.
  • Fewer daylight hours for sightseeing.
  • Some attractions close early or are closed entirely during off-season.

Your AAA travel agent is available to help you thoroughly research any destination during the off-season to help you plan the best trip possible. And remember that if off-season proves to be too constraining, consider "shoulder season" (April, May, early June, September and early October). Call (800) 430-9001 to speak with a travel agent, or visit www.AAA.com/travel.
