Spring Cleaning
With the weather beginning to change, you may have the itch to start your spring chores. Here are a few reminders to help keep you safe:
- Wear appropriate protective clothing.
- Don’t wear anything loose that could get caught in equipment.
- Wear long pants.
- Choose appropriate footwear, no open-toe shoes.
- Wear headphones/earplugs and safety glasses to protect your ears and eyes.
- Wear gloves as needed.
- When getting equipment out in the spring, review the instructions and safety warnings to refresh yourself on proper usage.
- Be sure your extension cords are in good condition and appropriate for outdoor use.
- When mowing, pick up the yard first. Stones and other items can become dangerous projectiles.
- Keep children and pets away from power equipment and lawn mowers.
- Don’t let children and/or pets ride with you on a riding lawn mower.
- Use extension rods to clean gutters and a pressure sprayer for cleaning siding and windows.
- When using a ladder, have someone around to hold the ladder and help with supplies and equipment.

Traveling Light
For those wishing to reduce their impact on the environment, green travel (also known as eco-travel) is a continuing trend for 2010. Centered around the preservation of the earth, green travelers focus on the ideal of “lightening one’s load” and “traveling lighter with less”—concepts I wholeheartedly endorse.
Eco-friendly travel tips: Recycle and trade your old books, travel guides and newspapers with others you meet—I often give mine to flight attendants. Use gel instead of antibacterial wipes—no litter—then recycle the empty bottle. Travel with reusable shopping totes that pack flat (available at most AAA Travel Stores).
Support the local economy in the town you are in instead of only going to major retailers. Think organic and locally grown whenever possible and you’ll find that your trip and taste buds will be rewarded. Stay in hotels that offer the option of less washing of sheets and towels, and pack biodegradable soap. Use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable. And since you can’t take a full water bottle through security, take an eco-friendly empty one and fill it up for free at a water fountain on the other side. Save money and also the environment, one water bottle at a time.
