Flood Insurance — Facts You Need to Know
Doesn't my homeowners insurance cover flood damage? Typically it will protect you from water damage due to sudden burst pipes, but not due to flooding. Flooding includes inland or tidal water overflow, fast-moving erosion, surface water runoff from any source, abnormal tidal surges and mudflows. You need to have a separate insurance policy or endorsement to cover these types of hazards.
What about federal disaster assistance? In most cases, the only aid provided to disaster victims is in the form of a loan, which must be repaid with interest. Because the cost of both rebuilding your home and replacing its contents can be great, insurance is a better financial solution.
I live in a low-risk flood insurance area. Do I need flood insurance? Regardless of whether your flood risk is high or low, it is a good idea to buy flood insurance. More than 30 percent of all flood insurance claims come from areas with minimal flood risk.
Is it true that flood insurance is hard to get and can only be purchased from the government? Even though flood insurance is offered through a federal program, it can be purchased from a local insurance agent. A flood application is one page and can be purchased with a credit card.
Contact AAA insurance today to get more information on flood, home, car and the many other insurance products that AAA offers. For more information, go to www.AAA.com/insurance, call (877) 222-4678 or visit a AAA Insurance agent at your local AAA office.
