The Science of Driving

How would you like to cut your risk of a car crash in half? The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has partnered with Posit Science to bring you DriveSharp—a clinically proven "brain-fitness" software program you can use to be your best behind the wheel.

"Part of making our nation's roads safer is helping drivers who wish to stay active maintain or improve their driving safety," says AAA Foundation CEO Peter Kissinger.

The Posit Science programs have helped thousands of people think faster, focus better and remember more—and now this technology is available to the public in a product designed to improve driving reaction time and control on the road.

The technology behind DriveSharp is based on science funded by the National Institutes of Health and has been designed and tested by a global team of more than 50 scientists.

It's fun, too.

You'll work with two computer-based, gamelike exercises, Jewel Diver and Road Tour, which are designed to help your brain build new skills and improve on the skills it already has—especially with regard to your field of vision and your reaction time. Ultimately, this translates into you becoming an even safer driver than you already may be.

A free online assessment and more information about the DriveSharp software can be found by clicking here. Members can purchase DriveSharp through AAA for the discounted price of $99 (normally $139).

A Life Saver

Last September, Sierra Clark, a fifth grader at Minnehaha Elementary in Vancouver, Wash., saved a fellow classmate's life while she was on School Safety Patrol duty. For her heroic effort, AAA, the creator of the school safety patrol, honored her with the highest patrol award given, a AAA Lifesaving Award in Washington, D.C., last May.

Clark's patrol adviser, Mona Ellis, and Clark were crossing students during a safe gap in traffic. A speeding car came up the hill and turned into the school driveway right where students were crossing, and Clark pulled her classmate out of harm's way.

September means school is back in session, so please drive carefully and watch for children crossing the roadway, especially in school zones and the parent drop-off areas.

Squeaky clean - 2nd annual Soap for Hope

AAA and KOMO Newsradio are kicking off the 2nd annual Soap for Hope toiletry item donation drive beginning Oct. 1.

The best part is that each AAA office has selected a local charity, food bank or shelter to receive the items, so your donations stay in your community and serve your neighbors.

Last year AAA collected more than 30,000 items in just six weeks thanks to generous members just like you. Acceptable donations include sample- or regular-size, unopened: shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, shaving cream, razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant. In our current economy, donations of these everyday items are needed more than ever.

Donations can be made at any AAA office Mon.–Fri., from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. or in the lobby at Fisher Plaza (home of KOMO Newsradio) across from the Space Needle in downtown Seattle. For details and the location of your local AAA office, go to www.AAA.com. Listen for additional Soap for Hope information on KOMO Newsradio in October.

September: Life Insurance Awareness Month

It may not be a cheery thought, but in trying to determine whether or not you need life insurance, ask yourself: “If I died today, is there anyone who would be impacted financially? How would my plans for the future be carried out? How would my responsibilities be fulfilled?”

The fundamental purpose of life insurance is to provide money to those who rely on you financially, when you die. This could be your immediate family, an aging parent or your business partner.

When assessing the amount of life insurance you need, there are plenty of factors to consider. We can help make the process easier by offering advice, and assisting with a needs analysis, and explaining coverage options and costs.

Contact the AAA Insurance Agency today to get more information on life, home, car and the many other insurance products that AAA offers. For more information, click here or call (877) 222-4678 to speak with a AAA Insurance agent.
