Smucker's Stars on Ice

The Lady is a Champ

Olympic Silver Medalist Sasha Cohen glides through Washington with Smucker's Stars on Ice

by Nicole Meoli

Skater extraordinaire and Olympic Silver Medalist Sasha Cohen will be visiting Washington Jan. 23 (Spokane Arena) and Jan. 24 (KeyArena at Seattle Center), as she tours with Smucker’s Stars on Ice. Performing along with her during these two exciting shows are Olympic Gold Medalist Ilia Kulik, World Champion Todd Eldredge and World Champion Yuka Sato, among others. Cohen took time out of her busy practice schedule to answer a few questions from Journey magazine:

What’s your favorite part of touring with Smucker’s Stars on Ice?
I think the fact that it’s such a creative show and we constantly push the limits of skating and with such a talented cast. It’s just such a pleasure to tour with them and work with them. It’s been one of the best experiences of my life.

Since you go to many cities on the tour, which are your favorites and what do you like to do in some of them?
When I’m in New York City I love to just walk around and explore new areas. I go to Buddakan a lot to eat. Boston is always a cute place to go to the harbors and wharfs and walk around. When I’m in LA, where I have a lot of friends, I go out on Sunset and to different restaurants in West Hollywood. I love the restaurant Koi.

You’re coming to Spokane and Seattle in January, so what will you do on your down time while here?
I love Seattle! I love Pike Place Market, it’s one of my favorite places to go anywhere. I’ll be walking all around there.

What’s the most demanding part about being on tour?
I think the constant traveling can get tough, you know, when you have to take a cab to the airport and then go through security and check in and deal with all of your luggage…it’s tiring. Usually we take a tour bus, but this year we have so many breaks we’re all flying.

I have to ask, what was it like working with Will Ferrell on Blades of Glory?
He was really nice. He’s so down to earth and just a really great person. He was so interested in everything we did, he’d be like: “How did you do this?” and “How did you learn that?” And it was a lot of fun to hear his point of view on his lessons.
